A spokeswoman for Manchester Airport said: “Our airfield team has been working through the night to keep the runways clear, which resulted in the day’s operations starting as planned.
“However, as conditions worsened significantly this morning, we took the decision to temporarily close our runways.
“We continue to work to mitigate the challenging conditions and hope to minimise further impacts. However, the safety of our customers and staff is our number one concern and there is likely to be some disruption this morning.
“Customers are advised to check the status of their flight with the airline and allow extra time for journeys to the airport to ensure they arrive safely.
“We will provide further updates as soon as possible.”
It has been telling passengers the airport will stay closed until at least 9.30am.
Meanwhile at Liverpool the runway is also closed and flights cancelled.
The airport told passengers to contact their airline direct for information
Edinburgh Airport has installed three new scanners in its security hall, reducing wait times for passengers, enhancing security and readying the airport for the future introduction of 100% scanning by the UK Department for Transport.

The new scanners complete a full scan-and-analyze cycle in just 3.8 seconds in the standard model
Commenting on the installation, Peter Barnes, security operations manager at Edinburgh Airport, said, “The Rohde & Schwarz scanners have improved our security performance thanks to its high accuracy rate and the low frequency of false alarms which has maximized our passenger throughput and resulted in our staff having full confidence in the scanners.
“It’s also improved the passenger experience by making their journey through the airport as fast and efficient as possible, while the open nature of the new scanners compared to the previous enclosed version has been a welcome addition.”
The very short scan time means there is no time for the passenger to move and disrupt the scan. The QPS201 also has a much smaller width and a significant weight reduction, which is enough potentially for an extra scanner to be installed in each lane in the same space.
