Thomas Cook considers selling its airline

Thomas Cook is considering selling off its airline to give it greater ‘financial flexibility’ to invest in its own-brand hotels and the digitalisation of its sales channels.

phone 0800-6190575 for Airport transfers Falkirk

The announcement came as it reported an increase in losses for the three months to the end of December from £14 million to £60 million.

Meanwhile revenue was largely unchanged, rising just 1% to £1.66 billion.

Chief executive Peter Fankhauser said a review of the airline was in early stages and would look at ‘all options to enhance value to shareholders and intensify our strategic focus’.

Thomas Cook currently operates a fleet of 103 aircraft, a quarter serving long-haul destinations.

Referring to trading in the first quarter, Fankhauser said: “As expected, the knock-on effect from the prolonged summer heatwave and high prices in the Canaries have impacted customer demand for winter sun.

“Where summer 2018 bookings started very strongly, bookings for summer 2019 reflect some consumer uncertainty, particularly in the UK, and our decision to reduce capacity which will both mitigate risk in our tour operator business and help our airline to consolidate the strong growth achieved last year.”

Thomas Cook said strong customer demand for Turkey and North African destinations had offset weaker demand for Spain.

Highly competitive market conditions in the UK had hit gross margins, it added.

Callendar House has just received a five-star rating from VisitScotland. The 14th century building, set within Callendar Park and opened to the public in 1996 after centuries as a family home with links to Mary Queen of Scots , has achieved the national tourism organisation’s top-quality award. The House dates back to the 14th century.

For categories including core experience, catering, hospitality, friendliness, staff efficiency and cleanliness it reached “exceptional” standard following a Quality Assurance visit.

The house is a credit to the local area and is a fantastic free day out. It features art, history, interactive fun and a warm welcome from the team, all set within beautiful parklands. Also possibly the best cakes in Falkirk in the tearoom.

The House, which sits along a stretch of the Antonine Wall, is also a member of VisitScotland’s Taste Our Best and VIP schemes. It boasts a working 19th century kitchen where costumed staff create an interactive experience for visitors and offer samples of early 1800s food as well as a museum which details the story of the house and area covering the 11th to 19th centuries.

Edinburgh Airport has pulled out all the stops to help families make a smooth departure with their new  security queue for families .

But airport bosses are urging travellers to “prepare for security” following a spate of recent delays and hold-ups involving the terminal’s new £25 million security hall.

Now airport chiefs are temporarily bringing in a dedicated family line to help parents and youngsters get through security and “make that part of the journey easier”.

And with the annual Edinburgh trades holiday kicking off next weekend, David Wilson, the airport’s chief operating officer, vowed staff would be “pulling out all the stops”.

He said: “Last month saw over one million passengers travel through the terminal – our busiest May on record and almost ten per cent up on last year.

Visit Stirling Castle – top tourist attraction

Stirling Castle is one of the top tourist attractions in central Scotland . The castle features the Royal Palace , the Great Hall and the castle.

Update – November

Stirling Castle has been named Scotland’s best visitor attraction at the inaugural 2016 Scottish and Outdoor Leisure Awards. The castle, which attracts about 460,000 visitors per year, beat competitors including Edinburgh Zoo and Dynamic Earth.

The castle’s executive manager Liz Grant said winning the award was a “wonderful achievement”.

She said: “Scotland’s heritage attractions, such as Stirling Castle, form an important part of the country’s wider tourism and leisure offering and it’s great to see this recognised.

“This accolade is made doubly special as it is initially voted for by members of the public and our visitors.”
If you go into the Great Hall you can take a seat at the top table and picture yourself as the King or Queen of Scotland .

‘ So let us pass … to the ports of Sterling ; where stands a beautiful and embellished Castle, elevated on the precipice of an impregnable rock , that commands the vallies ( as well as the town ) and all those habitable parts about it … ‘- Richard Franck , Northern Memoirs , 1656

Stirling Castle is built on the volcanic rock high above the town. From the castle you can see Stirling Bridge and the Wallace Monument.

It has been said that whoever controlled Stirling castle controlled Scotland because of its strategic position.A Roman Fort, built on castle rock, was replaced by a new castle at the command of King Alexander I.At the end of the 13th century the castle was rebuilt in stone , because of its strategic importance and the protection it offered.

In 1297 the Scottish forces of William Wallace gathered at Stirling Bridge , in front of the castle ,and overcame the English in the most notorious defeat ever suffered by an English army. In 1313 Edward Bruce (brother of the would-be Scottish King) blockaded the fortress and forced King Edward II to meet King Robert The Bruce’s forces at Bannockburn. The heavily outnumbered Scottish forces inflicted a stunning defeat upon the English and the castle was surrendered to King Robert.

In 1452 Stirling was the site of the murder of William, 8th Earl of Douglas by King James II. A stained glass window bearing the Douglas Arms now overlooks “Douglas Garden.”

On the 9th of September 1543, the infant Mary , Queen of Scots , born in nearby Linlithgow Palace ,was crowned in the chapel royal at Stirling.

There are supposed to be over 1000 ghosts in Stirling Castle , the most famous of all being the Green Lady.
